  • NERO WOLFE:  THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON first shipped in May 2003.  That edition unfortunately included a number of cuts in the footage and Pfighters were quick to bring the problem to A&E's attention.  As a result, A&E has replaced the original disks with a newly issued, uncut set.  More details can be found in this document:
  • The DVD—details on the quality of the DVDs, with comments from the Yahoo! Pfight group.

  • Nero Wolfe Sites—Other groups and fansites of interest to Wolfe aficionados.
  • THE DVD
The DVD is a boxed set of three disks containing all the episodes in the First Season.  Details on the contents of the set can be found on the A&E site and on the sites of other vendors.  Details of the contents are accurate as reported on those sites.  The reissued set has a round yellow sticker bearing the notation "Collector's Edition" on the front of the box.  [Note:  There have been reports of unabridged sets received without the Collector's Edition label.  It may be that only those who returned sets for exchange received a box with the sticker.  Check your disks against the Catalog of Cuts to be certain you have an unabridged edition.]
The quality of the DVD is outstanding.  The transfer is superb.  The color and the sound are both lush and reveal details in the filming that were not always clear in the original broadcasts.  The sound is Dolby Digital Stereo. The reissued disks are also Close-Captioned.  Here are some comments from early viewers, who have reported their observations on the Pfight board:
The color is rich and exquisite; the sound is Dolby Digital Stereo.  They are a thing of beauty on the screen, I swear.  – Toots, post to Yahoo! Pfight
Congratulations on the superb technical quality of the newly-released Nero Wolfe DVDs; many fans have already received the DVDs and are marveling on internet discussion boards at your company's achievement in transferring those beautiful shows into DVDs -- the color and sound are magnificent. – Peephole, letter to Resolutions Productions
They are truly beautiful!  Just look at them!  The colors!...  NO other movie has such brilliant color selections, the cars! the hats! the lipstick! the costumes!  The cast is perfect... The music is simply charming...  – Pantone127c, post to Yahoo! Pfight.
The sound and picture is stunning.  Even dialogue that was muffled in the original broadcast seems a tad clearer on the DVD.  – Lady Shelley, post to Yahoo! Pfight.
O! The sound!  The color!  The depth of detail!  I could read the fine print on Mrs Brunner's check.  I could see the doodling on Wolfe's notepad, the detail on his watch fob.  I swear I could see every leaf of every herb on Fritz's cutting board.  For the first time, TH's eyes appeared on my screen in all their glorious blue.  – Lovin' Babe!, post on Yahoo! Pfight.

Anyone with updated information regarding the return policy at A&E is urged to notify the manager of this site.
    eBay
    http://www.ebay.com/
Prices vary widely on eBay and, of course, there is no guarantee that the set received will be the reissued DVD.  There are some few vendors that have noted they are auctioning the reissued set, but most do not offer this information.  Pfight recommends sending an email to the seller before bidding and asking if the set is unabridged.  Keep in mind that some unabridged sets sold after the reissue may not have the yellow "Collector's Edition" sticker at all.  If the seller does not respond, declines to provide information, or has a no-returns policy, the buyer should beware.  The only true test for disks sold through eBay is a comparison to the Catalog of Cuts
Replacement Policy:  Vendors on eBay are unlikely to exchange abridged disks.A&E, however, has consented to replace abridged disks purchased through eBay if they are returned with payment for shipping.  Call A&E at 888-423-1212 for instructions.
    A NOTE ABOUT ABRIDGED DISKS
The reissued set is identical in appearance to the original issue, with the exception of a round yellow sticker bearing the notation "Collector's Edition" on the front of the box.  Some unabridged sets sold later may not have this sticker at all.  For these reasons, the Pfight strongly urges anyone possessing abridged disks to mark each disk and the box "ABRIDGED", whether the disks are being returned for replacement or not.  This will alert future purchasers, especially those on eBay, to the edited condition of the set.  A Sharpie marker will do the job quite nicely and can easily be found at any office supply store.  Please help alert others to the condition of your set, whether you keep it, return it, auction it, or merely pass it along to your local library or another fan.
    CATALOG OF CUTS
In the original issue of the Season One DVD, all but two of the episodes contained cuts.  It appears that A&E supplied the DVD production company with masters from repeat broadcasts, in which scenes were trimmed to allow for more commercial time.  Some of the cuts are miniscule, others omit important scenes, all are annoying and unneccesary.  Below is an attempt to catalog cuts made in the DVD.  The Pfight makes no claim that this list is comprehensive—there may be other cuts that its members missed.
As a result of pressure from Pfight members, A&E replaced the original issue with disks containing the complete episodes.  This list is intended as a guide for those attempting to determine whether or not their set contains the complete first season.
    VOL. 1
    THE DOORBELL RANG:  No cuts.
    Originally aired 22-Apr-01.
    CHAMPAGNE FOR ONE:  Two Cuts:
    Originally aired 29-Apr-01 (Part 1) and 6-May-01 (Part 2).
Cuts match those in the rebroadcast beginning 2-Nov-02.
    (1) Part 2, Chapter 2, at 08:56, approx. 20 secs.
Summary:  After Cramer confronts Wolfe in the plant rooms, the DVD cuts from Cramer leaving the room to Wolfe on the phone with Saul.
Missing:  Cramer leaves the plant room and Archie pesters him down the stairs and out the door, saying finally "You oughta take off your coat before you leave or you'll catch cold."
    (2) Part 2, Chapter 4, at 18:17, approx. 50 secs.
Summary:  The DVD cuts from Archie agreeing that he should get out of the house and away from "the miracle" to Dinky Bine arriving at his apartment.
Missing:  Archie arriving on the street in front of Dinky's apartment and trying to reach him on the telephone.  Archie entering Amy's Nook and describing his pie-eating marathon while disguising his activity from the Nook's staff:  "To keep from arousing curiosity, either by my tenure or my diet, I made sketches of the cat..."
    VOL. 2
    PRISONER'S BASE:  No Cuts.
    Originally aired 13-May-01.
EENY MEENY MURDER MOE:  One Cut:
    Originally aired 3-Jun-01.
Cut matches that in the rebroadcast of 30-Nov-02.
    (1) Chapter 5, at 32:03, approx. 1:20.
Summary:  A complete scene has been deleted after the end of Wolfe's interview with the three law partners.  The DVD resumes at the point where Cramer enters the dining room.
Missing:  Scene includes Archie escorting the partners to the door and his voiceover comments on their attitudes, Archie's asking Wolfe if there are instructions, the confrontation between Archie and Wolfe in which Archie asks "Is it this rancor?  Is it this pimple on your brain?", Wolfe's departure for lunch over Archie's protests, and the start of lunch with Archie's voiceover about the rules against disturbances at meals.  This cut, incidentally, includes the first and major reference to the title of the episode.
    DISGUISE FOR MURDER:  Two Cuts:
    Originally aired 17-Jun-01.
Cuts match those in the rebroadcast of 23-Nov-02.
    (1) Chapters 5 & 6, at approx. 30:00; approx. 40 secs.
Summary:  The DVD cuts from Wolfe, Archie and Saul at the dinner table and resumes with Archie pulling his car to the curb.
Missing:  Wolfe does not see Archie to the door as he leaves for what Wolfe knows to be a very dangerous encounter.  After the scene at the dining table, the three men stride into the front hallway. Archie and Saul put on their coats, Saul gives Archie a gun, and Wolfe asks, "Are you sure it's loaded?"  Archie responds, "Next you're gonna ask if I got my rubbers on."  Wolfe opens the door for them and they exit.  Wolfe closes the door and the camera remains on his concerned face.  The cut continues into the next scene, deleting the diner sign indicating Archie's destination and Archie driving down the street.
    (2) Chapter 6, at 38:53, approx. 20 secs.
Summary: After the confrontation at the warehouse, the DVD cuts to Wolfe entering the office and then opening a beer.
Missing: Cramer directs a uniformed officer to remove the seal from the office door, and grudgingly watches the contemptuous hallway parade of Wolfe, Archie, and the beer-bearing Fritz into the office.
    VOL. 3
    DOOR TO DEATH:  Two Cuts:
    Originally aired 24-Jun-01.
Cuts match those in the rebroadcast of 9-Nov-02.
    (1) Chapter 3, at 20:02, approx. 10 secs.
Summary:  DVD cuts after Archie sticks Pitcairn's gun in the daughter's waistband and exits the greenhouse, and resumes with following scene in Andy's cottage.
Missing:  Sybil Pitcairn removes the gun from her pants and returns it to her father, all with great distaste.
    (2) Chapter 5, at 33:52, approx. 55 secs.
Summary:  The DVD truncates the scene at the brook with Wolfe, Saul and Archie on the far bank, and resumes as they open the door of the greenhouse.
Missing:  Saul and Archie jumping across the stream, Wolfe stoically and deliberately wading through it with no overshoes, and it's a tough and humiliating slog for him.  A comically pathetic highlight that sets up action in following scenes.
    CHRISTMAS PARTY:  One Cut:
    Originally aired 1-Jul-01.
Cut matches that in the rebroadcast of 20-Oct-02.
    (1) Chapter 4, at 15:49, approx. 1:20.
Summary:  DVD cuts from Archie saying that he is in the same class as Mrs Jerome, because he left out the bit about the fake marriage license, to Wolfe at the dinner table.
Missing:  The guests leaving Bottweill's studio, Purley detaining Archie and questioning him on why he was asked to attend, general banter between Purley and Archie.  Purley pointing out that Santa was wearing gloves and asking why.  Purley inviting Archie downtown.  Archie saying that he'll be there in the morning, but not too early.  Purley calling him a bum.  The scene is important not only for it being the best, sustained sequence with Purley Stebbins in all the episodes, but also because its emphasis on Santa's gloves sets up an integral later scene.
OVER MY DEAD BODY:  Four Cuts and Mutliple Title Errors:
    Originally aired 8-Jul-01 (Part 1) and 15-Jul-01 (Part 2).
Cuts match those in the rebroadcasts of 7-Dec-02 and 14-Dec-02.
    (1) Part 1, Chapter 4, at 17:05, approx. 45 secs.
Summary:  An important scene is deleted from the end of Carla's second visit to the office.  In the DVD, the scene fades out after Wolfe leaves the office and resumes with Carla and Archie entering Miltan's Studio.
Missing:  After Wolfe leaves the office, Archie follows him to the elevator and threatens to resign.  Wolfe has told the G-man that he doesn't have a daughter, and yet it appears that he does  Wolfe silences Archie with a single "Yes?"  Archie backs down, Wolfe repeats instructions.  Scene mirrors later action at the elevator in which Archie wins a confrontation with Wolfe.
    (2) Part 1, Chapter 4, at 18:50, approx. 10 secs.
Summary:  DVD cuts from the end of Archie's conversation with Ludlow to Archie's introduction to the assembled students and staff.
Missing:  Archie muses in voiceover on the situation and wonders why Neya seems indifferent to Ludlow's assistance.  He descends the stairs to the first floor.  A brief scene, but it clarifies some of the action.
    (3) Part 1, Chapter 6, at 36:20, approx. 5 secs.
Summary:  DVD cuts from Wolfe leaving the office in response to "Mr Green's" phone call and resumes with Archie leaving the kitchen.
Missing:  After leaving the office, Wolfe goes to the peephole and peers into the office.  In the office, Faber rises from his chair and looks around.
    (4) Part 2, Chapter 5. at 30:00, approx. 1:20.
Summary:  The DVD cuts from Archie speaking with Purley at the Maidstone Building to Wolfe and Archie entering Wolfe's bedroom where Carla is waiting.
Missing:  Archie returns home and looks to see if Carla is there, finding Neya and Fred in the office, going to the kitchen, and being directed by Fritz to the pantry where Carla is waiting.  Up in the plant rooms Cramer sits beside Wolfe at the potting bench.  Cramer drums his fingers on the bench.  Wolfe gives him a priceless look of mingled wonder and annoyance.  Archie enters and there is a exchange between him and Cramer in which it is apparent that Purley has called to tell of having met Archie at the Maidstone Buidling.  Wolfe says he needs to wash up and means to do it without Cramer.  He leaves, Archie follows. Cramer is exasperated.
    (5) Title Errors:
    - Part 1, Chapter 4.  Title should be "Col de Mort" (collar of death), not "Cul de Mort" (bottom of death).
    - Part 2, Chapter 2.  Title should be "Madame Zorka", not "Madam Zorka".  She is pretending to be a foreigner, not the proprietor of a bawdy house.  [Note:  This error was not corrected in the reissued set, presumably because the character's name was also misspelled in the end credits.]
    - Part 2, Chapter 4.  Title is given as "Pansy Bob".  The character, after whom the chapter is apparently named, is "Pansy Bupp".
    STRATEGY
With regard to the DVDs, the Pfight encourages viewers to broadcast their opinions of the DVD as widely as possible.  Members of the group are sending their comments to the staff at A&E, to vendors of the DVD, to vendors who should be carrying the DVD but aren't, to reviewers in the public media both online and in print, and to other fansites.  The object is both to encourage sales of the DVD, which can only help the effort to encourage future productions, and to pressure A&E to release the second season on DVD.
The Pfight's broader mission is to encourage both continued broadcast of the existing episodes and production of future episodes.  Pfighters want to see more broadcasts and in reasonable hours and have been writing to A&E to keep interest there alive.  But, efforts are not limited to A&E.
The Hallmark Channel is currently broadcasting both seasons in Europe and possibly other venues.  Episodes are being aired in China, but it is not known if those are via Hallmark.  Members of the Pfight have been writing to Hallmark to thank them for their support of the existing episodes and, keeping in mind that Hallmark also finances original productions, to encourage them to back future episodes.  Hallmark Entertainment Distribution is also involved in production of a mini-series, 5 Days to Midnight, starring Timothy Hutton.  The resident  femme fatale of Nero Wolfe,Kari Matchett, is also in the cast of the series, which is slated to run on the SciFi channel in 2004.  Here's hoping Hallmark's experience with this production encourages them to work with Mr Hutton again—on new episodes of Nero Wolfe.
Michael Jaffe, the visionary who created the original series and fought to see it into production, has completed a script for "In the Best Families", and has commitments from both Maury Chaykin and Timothy Hutton to reprise their roles. Mr Jaffe has expressed his gratitude to the fans who have supported his efforts.  Sales of the DVD can help his efforts by showing that there is a viable market for Nero Wolfe.
More information on the Pfight's efforts, along with extended contact lists, sample letters, and news releases can be found in the Pfight Files.  Some addresses useful in the Pfight's current push can be found in the sections below.

    A&E CONTACT LIST
The following are all fair game. The Network contacts are best used to request repeat broadcast of existing episodes and to badger for new productions.  Pfight members are also writing to all of these to ask why A&E is not promoting the currently available DVDs and to urge them to send sets to reviewers in the media.  Write to them to add your thanks for the announcement of the Second Season set and to urge them to make it so!
First Line Contacts for DVD/VHS, Marketing issues, and PR:

Another worthy recipient of email on the subject of the DVDs is Resolutions Productions, the company that did the remarkable job of transferring the episodes to DVD format.  When writing to them, please remember that they were not responsible for the cuts.  Pfighters should thank them for the quality of their work.
If any of the addresses above bounce, please notify the manager of this site.
    OTHER VENDORS
These vendors do not know that the DVD set exists, and the Pfight encourages fans—both prospective buyers and dedicated gad flies—to request that they include the DVD in their catalogs.  And, if they're not carrying the VHS tapes, to ask about those as well.  When working these sites, it's best to do a search, in addition to sending feedback, because sellers of books and tapes track searches on their sites.
    Amazon.com/Borders:  http://www.amazon.com/
To get the attention of this mega-seller, do a DVD search on "Nero Wolfe Complete First Season DVD Set"—you'll get zero search results, but that's the idea.  Scroll toward the bottom of the page until you will find a centered link that reads "Is there a specific product you'd like us to sell?  Tell us about it."  At present, Amazon sells only VHS copies of "The Doorbell Rang" and "The Golden Spiders", but oddly enough does not return either of these items in searches for "Nero Wolfe".  Search for these by name while you are there so the stats will look better.  And while sending them feedback, ask them why they don't have these tagged as related to Nero Wolfe.
    Barnes & Noble:  http://video.barnesandnoble.com/
At this point, Barnes & Noble offers only "The Golden Spiders" in VHS format.
    BestPrices.com:  http://www.uln.com/
    Best Buy:  http://www.bestbuy.com/
They have "The Golden Spiders" only, in VHS.

    Digital Eyes DVD:  http://www.digitaleyes.net/
    DVD Empire:  http://www.dvdempire.com/

    EntertainMe.com:  http://secure01.entertainme.com/
    Facets:  http://www.facets.org/
    New Video:  http://www.newvideo.com/
New Video bills itself as the "exclusive marketer and distributor for A&E Home Video".  Though it does offer VHS versions of "The Golden Spiders" and "The Doorbell Rang", it seems to be unaware that the DVDs have been released.  Get on their case by writing to info@newvideo.com.
    Surfeteria:  http://www.surfeteria.com/surfeshop/playback/cj386723mystery.shtml
The Surfeshop carries both "The Golden Spiders" and "The Doorbell Rang" in VHS.
    Showwow:  http://www.showwow.com/
    Video Universe:  http://www.cduniverse.com/
Both "The Doorbell Rang" and "The Golden Spiders" are on their list of "Cable Original DVD or VHS movie top selling items".  Video Universe has responded to email as follows:  "Hello, Unfortunately, we do not know if we will be offering that item. You can always keep checking the site."  Oh, we will.
    REVIEW SITES
Some of these sites provide an opportunity for users to post their own review of a product.  Others that don't can be encouraged to review the DVDs.  Keep in mind that the Pfight does not want negative comments regarding the cuts to effect the sales of the DVD.  Sales = $$$ = more Nero Wolfe.  Praise the good and mention the bad so that purists won't be taken unawares.  Don't discourage the potential buyer, and if you do mention the cuts, be certain to also mention that A&E has fixed the problem.
Some reviewers will not review a product if the producer has not sent them a copy.  Guess who has not sent out copies of Nero Wolfe for review?  That's right, A&E.  So, if you get back a response saying that it's against policy to review DVDs that haven't been supplied by the producer, the Pfight encourages you to send a copy of that letter to A&E and ask them why they're asleep at the marketing switch.  See the list of A&E Contacts for targets.
